A load bank is a device that develops an electrical load, applies the load to an electrical power source, and converts or dissipates the resulting power output of the source in the form of heat. A load bank consists of load elements along with the necessary protection, control, metering, and accessory devices required for safe and reliable operation.
A resistive load bank provides equivalent loading of both the generator and the prime mover. This means that for every kilowatt (kW) or horsepower (HP) of load applied to the generator by the load bank, an equivalent amount of load is applied to the prime mover by the generator.
Load banks are available in both single-phase and three-phase configurations.
