This type of earthing system is used when high-resistance grounding is required. It is commonly used for generator earthing, with a typical fault current rating of 5–10A.
This type of system is used where continuous operation is required even when a ground fault occurs. It allows the system to continue operating while limiting the fault current to a safe level.
In this system, a single-phase distribution transformer is used in conjunction with a loading resistor to provide high-resistance grounding. The system operates similar to an ungrounded system under normal operating conditions while retaining the ability to limit ground-fault current during fault conditions.
The primary winding of the grounding transformer is connected between the system neutral and ground. The loading resistor is connected across the transformer secondary winding.
When a ground fault occurs downstream of the grounding transformer, the ground-fault current flows through the fault and returns through the ground to the grounding transformer. The loading resistor limits the current flowing through the secondary winding, which in turn limits the ground-fault current returning to the system through the primary winding of the grounding transformer. The ground-fault current is typically limited to 5–10A, as per customer requirements.
The value of the loading resistor in the secondary circuit is calculated based on the required fault current and system voltage.
The transformer primary voltage rating should be the same as the system line-to-line voltage or line-to-neutral voltage. The secondary voltage is normally 240V or 110V.
